CJW Training Courses

By taking a training course through the Community Justice Worker (CJW) program, you can gain valuable skills while playing a vital role in bridging the civil justice gap across Alaska. Our goal is to have a CJW serving in every Alaskan community, and we need your help to make it happen!

The training courses are offered online and self-paced through Alaska Pacific University. Once enrolled, you’ll have 60 days to complete each course. Training is provided at no cost for CJWs who commit to taking at least one case through ALSC’s pro bono program and are encouraged to share legal information with their community.

Available Courses:
As of Summer 2025, all CJWs are required to take the newly launched Ethics for CJWs course.

  • Ethics for CJWs (Prerequisite): CJW trainees learn how to navigate ethical situations and uphold high standards of professionalism and integrity in their work.

After completing the Ethics prerequisite, you can continue with additional courses to become a trained advocate in the following areas:

  • Debt Collection Defense: Addresses strategies for handling debts, dealing with debt collectors and responding to debt-related lawsuits.
  • Domestic Violence Protective Order Advocacy: Provides best practices for assisting individuals in obtaining court orders for protection from domestic violence.
  • ICWA Enforcement: Examines the application of the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) in Child in Need of Aid (CINA) cases, emphasizing the role of Tribes and ICWA Advocates in ensuring tribal voices are heard.
  • Preparing Wills: Focuses on the importance of wills and provides basic steps for writing one.
  • SNAP Advocacy: Covers food stamp applications, appeals processes and advocating for fair benefits in Alaska.
