Free Monthly Legal Clinic for Veterans in Anchorage
ALSC and the Alaska Veterans Affairs host a free legal clinic in Anchorage at the VA Office once a month. Income-qualifying veterans consult with a lawyer at the clinic for civil legal matters including: consumer, family, public benefits, child support, housing, healthcare and more. Advance registration and income eligibility screening is required. You can sign up for an upcoming clinic by calling Alaska Legal Services at 907-222-4501. Upcoming clinics are located on the ALSC Legal Clinics calendar.
Securing Housing
ALSC helps eligible veterans stay in their homes by assisting them in nonpayment and other eviction proceedings. ALSC attorneys and advocates can also help pursue rent overcharge claims. Additionally, ALSC can help you take actions to improve housing conditions. More information about the types of housing issues ALSC attorneys can provide services for is also available on the ALSC housing page.
Keeping Families Together
Our staff preserves military families wherever possible through civil legal aid. We advise or represent eligible veterans who want guardianship or adoption for dependent children. We may assist with divorce, separation, child custody or support disputes. More information about family law issues is available on the ALSC family law page.
Protecting Income
ALSC helps veterans access and retain government benefits so they can keep food on their table and a roof over their heads. Legal services can be provided when government benefits are wrongfully denied, inaccurately calculated, or improperly terminated. Additionally, we may be able to help eligible Alaskans who are trying to obtain unemployment insurance, food stamps, Medicaid/Medicare and other public assistance.
Consumer Issues
Our attorneys represent individuals and families who face consumer law matters by providing legal advice and assistance. Additionally, help can be provided for Federal bankruptcy protection, unlawful debt collection practices prevention, overcoming illegal sale contracts or warranties, and preventing utility terminations.
