June 2022 Volunteer of the Month: Liz Mering

Filed Under: Homepage Featured, Volunteer of the MonthJune 7, 2022

Our June Volunteer of the Month is a former ALSC attorney who continues to volunteer with us! Thank you, Liz, for your unwavering support over the years.

Why did you choose to volunteer with ALSC?
I left my job with ALSC after almost five years and I didn’t want to leave the work itself completely behind. Working at ALSC only made me more aware of inequity in our justice system and how even basic information can be barriers for people. And volunteering is a small and easy way to keep helping our community.

What are some of your experiences at ALSC that have made a positive difference in the lives of others and/or the community?
I volunteer on the landlord tenant helpline once a month. Being able to provide some answers and info on a variety of questions and hopefully helping people avoid a situation turning into a legal situation is rewarding. For those looking for a volunteer opportunity this is a great one!

How do you think your experiences with ALSC will benefit you in the future?
Providing direct assistance is helpful to keep me working with people in a direct service capacity.

What do you do when you are not volunteering with ALSC?
I work in environmental advocacy with Cook Inletkeeper and work and live in Homer with my two doggos (Pancake and Mazie) and often can be found walking them on the beach.
