Remembering Evan J. Chyun:
Evan spent the summer of 2007 as an intern at the Public Defender Agency in Palmer, Alaska, while a student at the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School. As a law student, he devoted much of his time to working with the Prisoner Legal Education Project and the Custody and Support Assistance Clinic. He also served as an Executive Editor of the University of Pennsylvania Law Review, a legal writing instructor, and a member of both the Moot Court Board and the Trial Advocacy Team. After graduation, he led an impactful career as a public interest advocate, dedicated to pursuing justice in the most vulnerable communities, first as a public defender at the Defender Association of Pennsylvania. Evan moved to Alaska in 2012 to work at the Office of Public Advocacy in Anchorage and later in the Alaska Attorney General’s Office.
Evan passed away on May 29, 2022, four days short of his 40th birthday, in a tragic automobile accident in Anchorage, Alaska.
Evan’s friends say this of him: “Evan was a skilled trial attorney. He was in his own echelon, due to the rarity of his incredible intellectual fire power. However, this is not what made him unique, it was his intellectual prowess combined with his passion for his clients and his ability to effectively communicate with a jury that made him one of the most effective trial attorneys. The rare combination of these three traits made him unique. Many good trial attorneys possess, maybe one or two of these traits, however Evan had all three, as well as unparalleled work ethic.”
In honor of Evan’s ardent dedication to social justice and his love of Alaska, his family has established the Evan J. Chyun Summer Fellowship so that others may experience the beauty of the state and the professional opportunities it provides.
