SNAP Volunteer Stoel Rives

Filed Under: Volunteer of the MonthJune 12, 2024

Q1. Why did your firm choose to volunteer with ALSC?
Stoel Rives embraces public service as part of our professional duty as lawyers and has a rich tradition of providing pro bono legal services in our local communities. ALSC’s program to provide legal representation to nearly 2,000 Alaskans to restore their SNAP benefits was an ideal fit with our goal of providing pro bono service to vulnerable community members with limited means. This was a situation where everyone worked together to resolve this crisis.

Q2. How did this experience with ALSC make a positive difference in the lives of others and/or the community?
Our work, and that of the other participating firms, enabled these families to access the justice system to receive the state benefits they were owed. People who had been waiting for months for food aid were able to receive SNAP recertification. Several individuals we represented told us they were extremely grateful we provided vital legal services they could not otherwise afford. This exemplifies the mission of pro bono service.
