For our November 2024 Volunteer Spotlight, we are excited to highlight Taylor Horne. Taylor Horne, a dedicated Community Justice Worker (CJW), has been making a meaningful impact by helping Alaskans access critical resources. Residing in Juneau, Taylor balances their time volunteering and enjoying the outdoors with their family and pets.
Q1. Why did you choose to volunteer with ALSC?
About a year ago, I read an ADN article about the SNAP processing backlog. It made me sad for folks struggling to get by and feed their families and frustrated at the state’s processing backlog, which creates that suffering. So, I chose to volunteer with ALSC to try to help out those folks.
Q2. What are some of your experiences with ALSC that have made a positive difference in the lives of others and/or the community?
I get thankful messages back from clients who just received their benefits, knowing it will make a substantive difference in their lives. That’s evidence of the positive difference that ALSC is making for the Alaskans who need a helping hand the most.
Q3. How do you think your experiences with ALSC will benefit the community in the future?
Well, I hope the state gets its SNAP benefit processing situation sorted out and delays in delivering Alaskans’ rightful benefits don’t persist into the indeterminate future. But, in the interim, I hope folks who I’ve helped spread the word to others who might need a hand getting the benefits they have a right to and deserve. I hope more folks reach out to ALSC for assistance when they need an advocate.
Q4. What do you do when you are not volunteering with ALSC?
I love biking, kayaking, all flavors of skiing, and just living the dream in Juneau, with my fiance, soon-to-be stepson, an Akita (dog) named Bear, and two devious cats.
