Last month, ALSC was honored to travel to New York City to accept the Mutual of America Foundation Community Partnership Award on behalf of our Community Justice Worker (CJW) project in partnership with Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium (ANTHC), Alaska Pacific University (APU), Kodiak Area Native Association, and Association of Village Council Presidents. The Mutual of America Foundation Community Partnership Award celebrates nonprofit organizations from across the country that are helping to move our nation forward by building healthier, more equitable communities. Out of over 800 applications, the Community Justice Worker project was one of six recipients of this distinguished award.
Community Justice Worker Project
ALSC’s CJW Project borrowed inspiration from a program developed by ANTHC that addresses the shortage of health care professionals in remote areas. ALSC and project partners collaborate with community and Tribal leaders to create an inclusive, culturally competent solution for providing civil legal aid in underserved communities.
CJWs are recruited from rural communities and receive training through free online modules developed by ALSC in partnership with ANTHC and APU. This approach ensures the CJWs are well-equipped to deliver essential legal services to their communities. Recently, the CJW project has expanded to the lower 48, where CJWs are now responding to twelve natural disasters in American Indian and Alaska Native communities. This expansion was made possible through funding from a Legal Services Corporation Disaster Relief Grant.
We are proud of the recognition our CJW project has received and remain committed to building healthier, more equitable communities through this innovative and impactful program.
