For our July 2024 Volunteer recognition, we are excited to highlight Lam Ho Bao, a 2024 Equal Justice Works Rural Summer Legal Corps Student Fellow who has joined ALSC’s Bethel office for the summer. He has been an invaluable asset in providing direct legal services to the community and collaborating with the Community Justice Worker Resource Center (CJWRC). He has immersed himself in the local rural Alaskan community, learning how to empower residents and improve access to justice.
Lam Ho Bao concludes his Fellowship with ALSC at the end of this month, we invite you to read on and discover more about his impactful work and experiences:
Q1. Why did you choose to intern with ALSC?
A: The reason I chose to intern with ALSC is that I am in the Equal Justice Work Fellowship, and I chose ALSC as my first choice as the work is compelling and I wanted to serve this community and it has been a wonderful experience.
Q2. What are some of your experiences with ALSC that have made a positive difference in the lives of others and/or the community?
I had a family law case where I was able to assist someone with regaining visitation to their child. It was nice to help someone who could not get legal services otherwise. They were understandably, very emotional, and I was proud to have assisted them.
Q3. How do you think your experiences with ALSC will benefit the community in the future?
I think ALSC is a wonderful organization and there is a high need in many areas for legal aid and access to justice, if they come here and volunteer with ALSC (like through the CJW program) it would be a profound experience for their career.
Q4. What do you do when you are not working/interning with ALSC?
I like to visit and participate in the local events and culture in Alaska. I especially like fishing; it is very fun and the community here is really open and friendly. Everyone has been very welcoming.
