Alaska Legal Services Corporation (ALSC) is seeking a full-time staff attorney for its Fairbanks office to provide legal services to Tanana Chief Conference (TCC) member Tribes and tribal members. This position primarily involves representing tribal clients in proceedings related to the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA), as well as litigating other Native law and civil matters on behalf of TCC Tribes and tribal members. Travel to both rural and urban areas may be required.
The attorney will be expected to manage a caseload of state court child in need of aid cases, in addition to other civil and Native law matters. The attorney will also have the opportunity to participate in strategic coordination with statewide teams, and participate in appellate and impact litigation. A successful applicant will have a background in communicating and interacting effectively in cross-cultural situations and a commitment to race equity work. This position will be housed in ALSC’s Fairbanks office, but supervised and supported primarily by Anchorage-based staff, and as such should be comfortable working with some degree of independence and flexibility.
Applicants must be admitted to practice law in Alaska or admitted to practice in another state and eligible for an Alaska Bar Rule 43 waiver. Computer proficiency required (Windows operating system, Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Internet, e-mail and data entry).
Salary $66,002 – $99,003 per year DOE. Generous benefits and leave package provided, including partial reimbursement of relocation expenses.
