About Alaska Legal Services Corporation
ALSC offers free civil legal services to low income and disadvantaged people to protect their safety, their health, and promote family stability. We are dedicated to bridging the statewide gap between those who need civil legal help and those who are able to get it. We have an unwavering and longstanding commitment to assuring that Alaska’s rural communities have access to the justice system. Through advocacy, education, collaboration and litigation ALSC empowers individuals, protects fundamental rights, strengthens communities, creates opportunities, and achieves justice.
Alaska Legal Services Corporation is hosting an opportunity for two (2) law students to serve in the Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Veterans Legal Corps as Law Student Members. The Veterans Legal Corps Law Student Program will engage 238 law students to serve as AmeriCorps members around the country who are working to expand the delivery of legal services to low-income and/or homeless veterans and their families.
Veterans Legal Corps Law Student Members will improve the lives of low-income and homeless veterans by providing legal assistance that ultimately leads to higher incomes, better health, safer and more secure housing, and family stability. At ALSC, Student Members will serve alongside a Veterans Legal Corps Fellow (attorney). All Veterans Legal Corps Law Student Members will conduct legal research, draft legal memoranda and documents, engage in case investigation, conduct client interviews, and develop case strategy.
Students must complete a minimum of 300 hours of service by August 30, 2019, unless prior written approval is provided by Equal Justice Works. Requirements to serve include completion and clearance of the National Sex Offender Public Registry check, state criminal background check(s), FBI fingerprint criminal background check, and submission of proof of U.S. citizenship.
The Veterans Legal Corps AmeriCorps JD program is an AmeriCorps-funded program administered by Equal Justice Works that provides law students with the opportunity to earn an AmeriCorps education award of $1,230 that can pay educational expenses or student loans. Students may seek up to $4,422 in additional compensation for their service, for up to $5,600 in compensation. The $4,422 in additional compensation may be funded by a Federal Work Study Award, the student’s law school, local bar foundation, and/or other public interest fellowship awards. In addition, students are welcome to hold outside employment to supplement their income.
Interested candidates should send a resume and cover letter by April 15, 2019 to: Maggie Humm, Supervising Attorney, email@example.com. Qualified candidates will be contacted for an interview.
